Story of the changemaker
Everyone that is brought here has suffered through the worst, some were even on the verge of death. They’re found in such terrible conditions - without food, water shelter or clothing - left to fend for themselves in their most vulnerable state. These people had nowhere to go, but my father, M.M. Chacko, gave them a home and hope again. Today, my mother, my brother and I carry on his legacy and mission, determined to be their support system like my father was to them.” - Sushmita Chacko
Late M. M. Chacko got infected with polio when he was only 5 and lost the function of 75% of his body. However, he was not someone who would cower down to the discomforts of his life. His indomitable spirit and constant support from his family helped him start the New Malabar Punanradhivasa Kendra Charitable Trust (NMPC) in 2003 in Malpacherry, Kasargod, Kerala. He was like a father, brother, and son to the 120+ people who live here. After his death, his family continues to work for this cause, but they face several challenges.
Over 18+ Years, NMPC Has Been A Safe Haven For 18000+ Abandoned Souls All Thanks To M.M Chacko
The passing of M.M. Chacko has created a great emptiness in the lives of his family and the residents of NMPC. He was deeply cherished by them and was considered their savior and family. Even after one year of his demise, they still hold fond memories of him and will always keep him in their hearts. This is the legacy that he has left behind.
In the last 18 years, NMPC has been the haven for more than 18,000 people. Currently, they have over 120 residents including men and women. NMPC has been working tirelessly to serve the different sections of society who need help and support. They have reunited over 200 people with their families and have taken care of orphans and abandoned elderlies as well. They have also been working to eradicate alcohol addiction. NMPC is also a place that welcomes patients with physical and mental disabilities with open arms. They also have the caregivers of these patients.
“My father was dedicated to helping people who are often neglected by society - the old, disabled, and those suffering from mental health issues. These individuals are avoided and treated like wild animals, with no one to care for them. Even their own families have abandoned them, causing them to suffer and ultimately die on the streets. But NMPC is where they find safety again.”
They’re Struggling To Get Even Essentials For Their Residents Now
The death of M.M. Chacko has not only been an emotional struggle but also a financial one for the NGO he founded. With fewer supporters now, the organization is facing difficulties in meeting its monthly requirements to sustain its operations. From groceries to medicines, they are struggling to afford basic necessities.
"We also need help in acquiring construction materials. In the past six years, we have had to halt our construction efforts multiple times due to insufficient funds. Presently, our home can only accommodate 60 individuals, despite having 120 residents. Several of our bedridden patients are forced to sleep on floor mattresses instead of cots due to the lack of space. If we can obtain construction materials, we can provide ample room for everyone to live comfortably."
M.M. Chacko believed that the most valuable award one could receive is a satisfied smile from their residents and their general well-being. His family is diligently working to ensure that these smiles remain intact. You can support them in their efforts to give countless abandoned souls a better life and help carry on M.M. Chacko's legacy of kindness and compassion.
About the NGO: The New Malabar Punanradhivasa Kendra Charitable Trust (NMPC) is a beacon of hope for the abandoned and marginalized in Malpacherry, Kasargod, Kerala. Founded by the resilient M.M. Chacko in 2003, despite battling polio, NMPC has provided sanctuary for over 18000 individuals, offering shelter, care, and support to the elderly, disabled, and mentally ill over the years. Even after Chacko's passing, his family continues his noble mission.
