Help Neelavar Gaushala Protect 2000+ Abandoned And Injured Cows From Cruelty

Feel free to ask Campaigner for a new update on this Fundraiser.

The apathy and cruelty animals have to face every day has made it important for people to come forward and rescue them. Among these animals, are the gentle, kind cows. Unfortunately, they face abuse and abandonment on a daily basis. Today, there are a number of gaushalas dedicated to protecting these cows.

Neelavar Gaushala in Udupi is one such rescue ground and a safe home for cattle. The gaushala was established 10 years ago under the leadership of Pejawar Swamiji. It began as a modest movement to help home and care for cows. However, it grew to accommodate more and more cattle, most of whom needed rescuing from slaughterhouses.

Work at the Neelavar Gaushala begins at daybreak, and there is seldom a moment of rest. With over 2000 cows to care for, life is busy. Close to 70 percent of the cows here are male, and 30 are female. A large percentage of the cows here are injured and old. They need special love and care, and everyone at Neelavar gaushala is determined to give these helpless animals a good home. The gaushala is now headed by Vishwa Prasanna Tirtha Swamiji, and a trust of about 15 members oversee all operations of the Gaushala.

The cows at Neelavar are taken care of with love, but the gaushala faces its challenges too. The cows live in a tiered structure that has ramps built to ease the movement for them. While the objective has always been to give them freedom and comfort, they have struggled to give their cows a vast grazing ground due to lack of support. Besides this, they also face a challenge to continue feeding the thousands of cows they take care of. Especially during the pandemic.

The cows need a healthy combination of dry fodder, vegetables, grams, and corn that is shredded and mixed every day for their meals. The cattle’s fodder is mixed in a nearby factory and then brought in for distribution. At Neelavar gaushala, they spend Rs. 200 every day on each cow, that’s over 2 lakhs of expenditure for food, maintenance and electricity. Now, they’re struggling to keep going.

To help build awareness and raise funds for his mission, Swamiji even conducts a weekly social awareness program every month. He has also undertaken a ‘padayatra’ to help travel to different regions seeking assistance and sharing information about cattle and spreading awareness. Their intent is noble, but the ground realities are causing a daily struggle for the Trust and Swamiji.  Despite their best efforts, they can’t continue to feed their cows, and the challenges of increasing expenses constantly weigh them down.

They now need your help to afford fodder for 2000 cows in their gaushala in Udupi. These cows have found a good home after being abandoned and in pain. Without your help, they won’t make it.
