Six-year-old Yazan has already been through more than most children his age could imagine. After undergoing a bone marrow transplant on June 27, his mother, Tahseen, hoped the hardest part of his treatment was finally behind them. Instead, complications began soon after.

Yazan developed severe stomach pain, loose motions and blood in his stools. His platelet count started dropping, and his condition became increasingly difficult for his family to manage. A week ago, Tahseen noticed something that frightened her even more. Yazan had stopped recognising his family.

Today, he remains under treatment at Mazumdar Shaw Medical Centre in Bengaluru, where doctors are closely monitoring him and giving him medicines and injections. He has undergone MRIs and countless other tests, while physiotherapy has now also become part of his recovery.

Doctors have told Tahseen that Yazan will take time to recover. But for his family, every additional day of treatment comes with mounting expenses.

“Doctors are giving very costly medicines. One strip costs Rs 20,000 upwards,” says Tahseen.

The family travelled from Bihar to Bengaluru for Yazan’s treatment and has now been living there on rent for nearly a year. With their son requiring continuous medical care, they have been unable to earn from the fields they own back in their village.

And Yazan is not the only child Tahseen is caring for.

Her three-year-old younger son also underwent a bone marrow transplant in January. With both children facing serious health challenges, the family has been stretched emotionally and financially.

For months, Tahseen has watched her children undergo procedures, tests, medicines and treatments, holding on to every bit of hope. But the medical expenses have become increasingly difficult for the family to manage.

“We have lost hope,” she says.

Yet Tahseen continues to stay by her son’s side as he undergoes treatment. For Yazan to have the time he needs to recover, his family must continue paying for his medicines, injections, tests, physiotherapy and other medical care, while also managing their rent and daily expenses in Bengaluru.
