As Meenaz, Rajapatel’s mother, narrates his story on the call, the toddler is oblivious to her pain. He doesn’t know the call is to know his story, so that this fundraising campaign can be run. He is laughing, playing and having a seemingly normal childhood. But only Rajapatel’s parents know that behind this playful toddler there is a painful story. For four-year-old Rajapatel Saddampatel Chattaraki, most days, life is measured differently, by hospital visits, blood transfusions, medicines, and the hope that one day he can live like any other child.

Rajapatel has thalassemia, a genetic blood disorder that prevents his body from producing healthy red blood cells. To survive, he requires a blood transfusion every 40 days. Each transfusion costs between Rs 8,000 and Rs 10,000, an expense that has become an overwhelming burden for his family.

His parents are doing everything they can. Rajapatel's mother earns around Rs 10,000 a month by giving tuition classes, while his father takes up daily wage work and drives an auto-rickshaw whenever he can find passengers. Together, they stretch every rupee, often sacrificing their own needs to ensure their son receives the treatment he desperately needs.

But despite their relentless efforts, the financial burden continues to grow.

The little boy requires medicines that cost nearly Rs 3,000 every month. Because his immunity is weak, he frequently suffers from colds, flu and infections. His parents carefully monitor everything he eats, knowing that even a small illness can quickly become serious. Every day revolves around protecting his fragile health.

The family has already exhausted their savings of Rs 3 lakh on Rajapatel's treatment. They have borrowed money from relatives, but the loans keep piling up. With an older daughter to care for as well, they now face impossible choices. “We think ten times before spending even one rupee,” his mother says. “But when it comes to our children, especially Rajapatel, their health comes first.”

Today, doctors have told the family that Rajapatel's best chance at a healthy future is a bone marrow transplant. The procedure could free him from lifelong blood transfusions and give him the opportunity to grow up like any other child.

However, there are two major hurdles.

The family is still searching for a suitable bone marrow donor. And even if a donor is found, the transplant will cost approximately Rs 21 lakh, an amount far beyond anything they could ever hope to afford.
