1-Year-Old Nicholas’s Life Depends On Dialysis, But His Parents Are Struggling To Continue It
Sitting outside the dialysis room, Nicholas’s father, Manoram, breaks down.
“He was only 10 months old when we rushed him to the hospital for breathing problems. That’s when doctors told us his kidneys had failed. We sometimes had to still take him home despite low haemoglobin because we simply didn’t have the money to keep him admitted. Do you know how painful it is to choose between money and your baby’s life?” - Manoram, father
For a father who had waited so long to be blessed with a child, every dialysis session feels like a cruel reminder of the destiny life has forced upon him.
Each hospital visit brings more medicines, needles, and the same terrifying question in their hearts, ‘Will our son survive until tomorrow?’
After years of struggle, Manoram and Shibani were blessed with their first child, Nicholas - a cheerful little boy with bright eyes and an ever-smiling face. But today, that smile is gone.
Nicholas is only a baby, too young to even understand why his body is failing him
Instead of babbling new words and learning to walk, Nicholas spends his days hooked to dialysis machines, his tiny body scarred from endless blood transfusions. His parents, once full of dreams for their only son, are now fighting every day just to keep him alive.
“Every time they put needles in his tiny body, I feel the pain more than he does. I blame myself every day, wondering if I could have prevented his suffering. I just pray no mother ever is forced to watch her child suffer like this, helpless and unable to do anything.” - Shibani, mother
Every transfusion, every dialysis session, every night of hospital stay takes a piece of his childhood away
His tiny kidneys have already failed because of a rare genetic condition called Primary Hyperoxaluria. At just 16 months old, instead of learning to walk and babble new words, he spends long hours lying still as machines filter his blood through dialysis, three times a week.
As if that weren’t enough, Nicholas’s blood itself cannot keep him alive
He suffers from multiple blood disorders - Congenital Dyserythropoietic Anemia, HBE Thalassemia and G6PD Deficiency, which together mean that his body cannot produce healthy haemoglobin.
This is not just exhausting, it is devastating for a baby so young
Every few weeks, his tiny veins must endure yet another transfusion, because without those life-saving bags of blood, his heart would not even have the strength to beat.
His father, Manoram, had already spent Rs. 1.5 lakhs, everything he had, trying to keep Nicholas alive. But the cost of this fight is merciless. Doctors say his treatment alone will need Rs.6 lakhs for a year (Rs.50,000 every month).
Without continued dialysis, transfusions, and medicines, Nicholas’s fragile body simply cannot go on
Manoram works as a government employee in Assam, but since May, he has been living in Bangalore for his son’s treatment. He doesn’t even know if his job is still secure. With no income and rising hospital bills, this family is on the verge of losing everything.
They need Rs. 6 lakhs to save their only child
He cries endlessly in pain, while his parents cry silently beside him, praying for a miracle. With your support, Nicholas can continue his dialysis, get regular transfusions, and stay alive until doctors can plan long-term care.
“All I want is to see my son smile again. Please help us. Please don’t let his laughter disappear forever.” - Shibani, holding Nicholas close
Your donation can give Nicholas another day, another week, another year of life.
