Story of the changemaker
“In the few minutes it took to give his little brother a meal, Navleen was gone. I heard the scream from the neighbour, not from my son. My heart stopped when they said they saw Nvu fall off the terrace. Now, every day when I see a gap in my son’s skull where his bone used to be, I feel terribly guilty. I wish I ran behind him faster. They tell me it’s not my fault, but my heart knows I was supposed to protect him, and I failed him as a mother." - Amandeep, Navleen’s Mother
A playful run on the terrace ended in a horrific fall for this 2 year old boy
On January 26th, while the rest of the country celebrated Republic Day, 2-year-old Navleen’s life changed in a heartbeat. In the brief moment his mother was tending to his younger brother, Navleen tripped and fell.
His father, Harjit, was miles away, his hands covered in paint as he worked a double shift to provide for his boys. He dropped his brushes and ran only to find his eldest son lying unconscious.
Little Navleen was rushed to emergency care with a severe blood clot in his brain
The surgery was critical. Doctors had to remove a portion of his skull to save him from the pressure in his head. For days, Navleen lay like a statue in a sedated silence, unable to recognize the parents who sat by his side praying for a miracle.
But recently, Navleen opened his eyes. While he hasn't yet returned to the playful boy he was, the reduction in brain swelling is a sign that he is fighting to come back. He is just one neurosurgery away from having his skull made whole again - one step away from coming home.
They thought the worst was over after the first surgery. Now the second surgery has pushed them to the edge - emotionally and financially
Harjit’s daily wages as a labourer cannot fight a 6-lakh-rupee medical bill to keep his son in the ICU till another surgery.
"I am a painter. I spend my life fixing cracks in walls and making things look new again. But I look at my son in that ICU bed, wired to machines, and I realize my hands are useless. My hands are not only rough but empty now. But the doctors say he needs 6 lakhs more. The first surgery brought me hope but a need for a second one has left me stranded, helpless and out of money. I have nothing left to give the doctors to keep my son alive.” - Harjit, father
The silence in the ICU is the hardest part for this family
“Navleen was so chirpy, always running, always laughing. Our house was never quiet because of him. Before that day, my son never sat still even for a second. Now, seeing him lie there so still, unable to speak or play... it’s a silence I can’t bear. I would give anything to see him being naughty again, to hear his voice call out to me. I just want my happy, noisy boy back.” - Amandeep, Navleen’s Mother
Navleen is a fighter, but his family has run out of resources. To undergo the final neurosurgery and complete his ICU recovery, they need an additional Rs.6,00,000. Donatekart is raising funds to ensure Navleen gets the surgery and ICU care he needs to survive. Click here to save this family from an unthinkable loss.
