This Father & Ambulance Driver Lost His Arm In An Accident, Donate To Help Him Save His Leg

“My hand is gone… now I’m scared they'll take my leg too. What will I have left to give my family?” – Govindappa

For over 10 years, Govindappa was the man people called in emergencies – an ambulance driver in Kuppam, Andhra Pradesh, who saved lives without thinking twice about danger or time.

But on the night of April 20th, everything changed 

After dropping off a patient, his ambulance was hit—once by a lorry, then twice by buses. The crashes were so violent, they flipped his vehicle, crushed his phone, and nearly ended his life. The man who raced against time to save others is now fighting to save himself.

He had seven fractures - 2 in his thighs, 5 below the knee

By the time locals pulled him out and rushed him to the nearest hospital, his limbs were shattered. 

It took hours to even inform his wife, Bhagyalakshmi, as his phone was crushed in the crash. At the local hospital, the doctors couldn’t feel his pulse and asked him to shift to a larger hospital in Bangalore for emergency treatment. Two major surgeries followed. But just 2 days after surgery on his hand, the blood had stopped flowing. 

“His fingers turned black. They said if we don’t amputate, the infection will reach his heart. I stood outside the OT and begged them. But there was no choice. They said it’s either his hand or his life.” - Bhagyalakshmi, his wife

We don’t even have a roof over our heads now…

Bhagyalakshmi, a schoolteacher earning ₹8,000 a month, is now sitting outside hospital doors - jobless, homeless, hopeless. Since the accident, she hasn’t been able to go to work and doesn’t even know if she still holds that job.

“We did what we had to. Sold our house. Sold our land. I borrowed my relatives’ jewellery. Anything to get these 2 surgeries done and keep him alive. Now, we have nothing left. When they release him now, I don’t know where to take him. We have no roof over our heads anymore." – Bhagyalakshmi

Now, doctors say Govindappa needs another critical surgery - skin grafting, two metal rods, and extensive leg reconstruction that will cost them over 30 lakhs.

Even his twins are scared of him

"I was supposed to be the one who held the house together. Now I can’t even stand up without help. I can’t drive. My 7-year-old twins now stare at me in fear and confusion. They don’t understand why their Nana won’t hold them anymore.What kind of father am I now? I just want to walk again. Hug my kids with one arm. Earn something and feel human again." - Govindappa
