Parents To 80 Orphaned Kids, This Couple Is Working Tirelessly To Give Them A Better Life

Love can win hearts and make the impossible seem possible. 40 years ago when P Rajyalakshmi and SMD Khasim met in college, love won for the first time. They soon realized they wanted to spend the rest of their lives together. 

“Our families didn’t agree to this, but that didn’t stop us from being together. To us, the truth of our relationship was stronger than any differences and we were certain we would overcome any hurdles together and work towards our mission,” - Rajyalakshmi, Co-Founder, Manalo Manam.  

We know how painful losing a family can be - we want to help as many children as we can 

The second time, love won was when this noble couple decided to give back to society and support the poor and underprivileged. This is how Manalo Manam was born in Ongole, Andhra Pradesh in 2014. They provide a loving atmosphere and treat the orphans like their own families. They also provide quality education and vocational training as well as health care for children. Currently, they’re home to 80 children - boys and girls. 

Rajyalakshmi recalls an incident 5 years ago that is still etched in her memory. A little boy had come to the shelter home and after that night’s dinner, he asked her if he would get dinner every night. The question shocked her but soon she got to know that this was the first time the poor child had dinner in his life. Till now, he had only had lunch during the midday meals at his Anganwadi school.  

“I couldn’t imagine the pain this child and many more like him must be going through on a daily basis. My husband and I wanted to do something for them. Both of us were government employees and we didn’t think twice before spending all our pension on these children.”  

Most of these kids are from the SC/ST communities and have faced a lot of discrimination in their lives. They have lost their parents and have no one to look after them. A proper meal seems like a dream to them. Some of them are also HIV+ and need round-the-clock care. Rajyalakshmi and Khasim tirelessly work towards giving them a  better life. And their dedication has borne fruits. 

“30 kids are pursuing their studies in Kendriya Vidyalayas while others are in good corporate jobs or are preparing for engineering and medical exams. Their success brings joy to our hearts,” - SMD Khasim.

About the NGO: Founded by Rajyalakshmi and Khasim in 2014, Manalo Manam is an NGO based out of Ongole, AP, and is now home to 80 children belonging to financially and socially disadvantaged classes. Determined to give them a better life, the couple works very hard and welcomes every child with an open heart.
