Every 8 minutes, a child goes missing in India. S*xual exploitation is a multi-billion-dollar industry that significantly affects vulnerable populations. Several organizations and local authorities work to rescue those forced into this trade. Still, more often than not, the aftercare is not adequate, and as a result, these survivors end up going back to the same place from where they were rescued. Established in 2012 in Kolkata, Mahima India’s sole aim was to provide quality aftercare to the survivors of s*x trafficking.

Kolkata is a critical hub for human trafficking in India as it is a source, destination, and transit point for children trafficked to various parts of the country. Large amounts of money change hands regularly in the different red-light areas, private brothels, and hotels in Kolkata and its suburbs.
A 2022 report by the US Department of State on Trafficking in Persons states that only in the year 2022, 6,622 trafficking victims were reported identified; in addition, there were 694 potential trafficking victims. Founded by Mr. Finney Thomas and Ms. Smita Singh, Mahima India has been at the forefront of providing a safe haven for countless survivors of s*x trafficking.
“The situation is grim and the statistics don’t give you any assurance. The need of the hour is to create a strong aftercare facility that will instil in these survivors a new-found purpose in life. Most of them were too young when they got into this, so they know nothing beyond this world. It is our responsibility to equip them with the skills to face the world and be a part of mainstream society,” - Rajasree Dey Roy, Mahima India.
Rajasree is in charge of the Mahima homes that the NGO runs to provide specialized care to minor and major survivors of s*x trafficking as well as other girls and boys who have experienced extreme forms of trauma due to abuse like child marriage etc. She is also taking care of Ashaloy, a drop-in shelter situated in Sonagachi, Kolkata’s biggest red-light area. It is an oasis of hope for commercial s*x workers and their little children. Here, they’re given educational support, counselling, and holistic care to help them stand on their feet.
“These children deserve to live a life of happiness and respect like anyone else. And we are doing everything in our power to give them that. They live in small, dingy rooms with their mothers. When their mothers are taking clients, these children are kept away in the same room partitioned by a thin curtain. We wanted to change that and are working on our future project where we would have an open shelter for children to come and stay with us, especially during the late evenings and nights when they’re the most vulnerable.”

Even in the sordid alleys of Sonagachi, one can find rays of hope and stories of bravery. One such story is that of two girls, Nutan* and Tanaya* where the elder one went to a great extent to help rescue the younger girl, whom she had taken in as her sister. As Nutan was exploited for s*x work, she was determined to save Tanaya who was unknowingly being prepared by the couple to serve clients in the future. She was eventually rescued by the police with the help of Nutan, a former victim of the same couple. Placed in the care of Mahima Home, Tanaya found solace and a new lease on life. Such is the power of love and support, that Nutan was able to save an innocent life. Mahima India was with her from the start to the end and it is stories like this that make their tireless efforts worthwhile.
