“My brother-in-law passed away in front of my eyes. And I couldn’t do anything. I have never felt this helpless before. People are running to arrange for a bed, an oxygen cylinder but there is no option for them at all. We went to multiple hospitals in search of a bed and ventilator support but there was no way we could do anything. Finally, he breathed his last without any treatment. I have lost a near one and I know the pain. I don’t want anyone to go through the same. These are testing times, let’s all be kind to each other and help as much as possible,” - Aftab Khan, city-based journalist in Mumbai.

Just like Aftab, there are thousands of family members struggling to get their loved ones treated. And thousands more suffering from the deadly virus in Mumbai.

    The horrifying situation in Mumbai:

As many as 68,631 fresh COVID-19 cases and 503 deaths were reported from Maharashtra in the last 24 hours, the highest in the state so far since the pandemic broke out last year.

With this, the state health department's total number of active cases now stands at 6,70,388+, the state health department informed.

So far, as many as 31,06,828 recoveries and 60,473+ deaths have been reported. Out of the total fresh cases, 8,479+ were reported from Mumbai. 53+ lives were claimed by the virus in the city in the last 24 hours. There are 87,698+ active cases in Mumbai while the death toll stands at 12,347+.

    What they need:

The need of the hour is that of oxygen cylinders, oxygen concentrators, hospital beds and medical kits for frontline workers. Making The Difference, a Mumbai based NGO, is working closely with all public hospitals and nursing homes to provide them with life-saving healthcare equipment and supplies, to cope with the significant stress on the hospital system.

    Every contribution matters:

Making The Difference has been relentlessly working to provide every kind of help during this pandemic. They have helped distribute 7000 grocery kits to the murtikars and over 35,000 kits to the Dabbawalas of Mumbai last year. They’re once again up in arms to help the city fight a dangerous pandemic.

“The situation that we’re currently in is horrifying. It’s...it’s nothing less than an apocalypse. People have no access to even the basic stuff. We get thousands of calls every day asking for help. And yet there’s hardly much we can do. It’s more difficult for the lower-income group people. They are unable to pay the rent for the oxygen concentrators - they earn a couple of thousands. They have no other choice but to see their loved ones die in front of their eyes. We want to stop that from happening, we want to do our bit. Please help us,” - Gopal Raithatha, Project Head, Making the Difference

Even a small contribution from your side will make a huge difference for all those who are in a life and death situation. People are dying due to a lack of resources and despite the best efforts of the frontline workers. They are risking their lives to take care of all of us - let’s do our bit in fighting the pandemic and help save lives.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    1. Who would be benefitted from this endeavour?
Ans: We would do our best to distribute these beds and oxygen cylinders to the home-quarantined patients and the needy in the hospitals.

    2. How many calls/requests does MTD get per day?

Ans: We get more than 50 calls per day

    3. How big is MTD’s team?

Ans: More than 500 Volunteers are working on the ground to ensure that we help as many people as possible.

    4. Which city are you providing these supplies?

Ans - As of now, we have started with Mumbai and will scale it to other states.

    5. By when oxygen concentrators will be delivered? Ans - As you must be aware India has a huge shortage of oxygen concentrators and its applied accessories. Hence we are importing OC's from international destinations. We are able to procure the first lot of 350 OC's which are expected to fly on 7th April from Foshan, China. Another 500 OC's are under process that we are pushing to connect to India by the first week. Rest all OC's are expected to reach by 15th May 2021, but we are trying our level best to expedite it further.

    6. What's the exact price of Oxygen Concentrators?

Ans- Because of huge demand and scarce supply prices are super volatile and changing every day. We are giving priority to connect products at the earliest in India. Hence we are going with different suppliers and booking the OCs which meet our standard specification and delivery timeline. In an average 10L is costing around 65K to 70K and 5L around 45K to 50K. OC prices in the campaign are tentative, the real cost of price may change because of supply-demand stress.
