Abandoned By Their Own, These Patients Seek Help At The Akal Charitable Hospital, Support Them

“When your own children and family refuse to take care of you, you lose the desire to live. These are the people for whom we had given our all, hoping that when the time comes, they too shall support us. But life had other plans and now we are abandoned by our very own,” - an elderly patient in Akal Charitable Hospital. 

A 120-bed Charitable Hospital in the backward district of Sirmaur, Himachal Pradesh, run by Kalgidhar Society, is a ray of hope for hundreds of such abandoned and suffering senior citizens. More than 39,000 poor, underprivileged patients in a year are given primary healthcare and other emergency medical services completely free of cost in this charitable hospital founded in 1995.

The Kalgidhar Society – Baru Sahib is a non-profit charitable organisation focused on providing quality education to fight against the alarming rise in substance and alcohol abuse. With equal stress on Healthcare, Women's Empowerment, and Social Welfare, the organisation has been instrumental in the socio-economic uplift of the poor in the far-flung rural areas of North India. 

The organisation constantly follows the teachings of Sant Attar Singh Ji, Sant Baba Teja Singh Ji, and Sant Baba Iqbal Singh Ji.

Sant Attar Singh Ji's support for girls' education integrating with spirituality demonstrates his insight to save generations. To fulfil the vision of Sant Attar Singh Ji, in 1956, Sant Teja Singh Ji revealed Tapo Bhumi Baru Sahib, a serene and picturesque land in the lower Himalayas of Himachal Pradesh, northern India. Accordingly, he established The Kalgidhar Trust/Society to further the mission of spreading universal peace and brotherhood by combining spirituality with modern scientific education. To carry forward the mission of Sant Ji, Baba Iqbal Singhji worked tirelessly to establish 129 Akal Academies in Punjab, Haryana, U.P., and Rajasthan, wherein 65,000 students are being imparted value-based education.

“These people suffer a lot without proper care. So when there’s a place that offers them the best medical facilities, they try their best to avail it. The patients and their attendants travel to Akal Charitable Hospital by bus, horse, or foot. Their journey is difficult and full of danger. But they get rid of deadly diseases free of cost with free medicine and nutritious meal during their treatment. We, here, are dedicated to giving them a better life,” - Pushpinder Kaur, Program Manager, The Kalgidhar Society.

4 free medical camps are held in Sirmaur every year where the Society helps provide free expensive surgeries are provided to the poor and needy by the best doctors in India and abroad. Akal Charitable Hospital is the only hospital in the region attending to patients with snake bites for which expensive antivenin is given. The hospital did stupendous work during the COVID when they treated over 750 individuals with an over 90% success rate.
