Khaana Chahiye Is On A Mission To Help Over 44,000 Poor Families In Mumbai Fight Hunger

Feel free to ask Campaigner for a new update on this Fundraiser.

The second wave of the pandemic left Mumbai at the epicentre of the crisis once again, as thousands were left struggling and helpless. The sudden rise in cases in March 2021 caused our healthcare system to come crashing down, and along with also the livelihoods of millions of people. There were those who lost their only source of income, and continue to suffer till date.

To combat this issue, Khaana Chahiye Foundation was formed with a mission to  cater to the unmet food demand of those in need in the city of Mumbai during the Covid-19 crisis. What started as a citizen-led initiative in March 2020 soon evolved into a volunteer driven organisation striving to eliminate hunger in Mumbai.

“While the lockdowns have been eased, the local economy is still struggling to recover. Lakhs of people don’t have the luxury of working from home and have lost the only job they had. A large number of people are suffering and the situation on ground continues to be terrible.” - Swaraj Shetty, Co-founder, Khaana Chahiye

Khaana Chahiye Has Served Millions Of Meals During The Pandemic

Khaana Chahiye now has more than 250 active volunteers, 18 ground organizations and multiple citizen collectives.

In the past year, they have distributed 20,000 grocery kits and other essentials to migrant labourers and other vulnerable populations who could still cook at home. In addition to that, they served 4.6 million meals. They also distributed water, snacks, masks and sanitisers at three of Mumbai’s major train stations serving 284 Shramik Express Trains. They have also worked alongside professional nutritionists and seasoned social workers to curate a grocery kit that can support the family while ensuring quality nutrition. Their kit can sustain a family of 4 for 12-15 days.

This year, amid the second wave, Khaana Chahiye is determined to ensure no one goes to bed hungry. So far, they have distributed over 44,000 grocery kits and served 1.6 million cooked meals. Their goal is to reach out to as many vulnerable families as possible. Their operations are extended to the entire Mumbai Metropolitan Region, covering requests from areas that do not receive adequate aid.

Their Impactful Initiatives

Khaana Chahiye has several initiatives to combat hunger. They launched the Hunger Map Project, a collaborative policy intervention with stakeholders from academia, civil society, policy researchers and local government body (BMC) where they work together to come up with long-term solutions to fight hunger in Mumbai. Through this project, they have started 3 community kitchens in collaboration with grassroots organizations and women-led self help groups.

They have also launched an SOS Report Hunger feature on their website, where people can report communities or families in distress. Khaana Chahiye then sends aid after verification. They have impacted over 800 families so far through this.

They Can Help Over 44,000 Families With Your Support

Today, Khaana Chahiye Foundation needs your help to give groceries to these vulnerable people who have no one else to rely on.
