“The day my son died of su*cide…I still fed the hungry. I cremated him after I served the people. Because I knew that if I didn’t go that day, someone else’s child would sleep hungry, and I couldn't live with that.” 45-year-old Jamshed Singh Kapoor.
For over 20 years, every single day without fail on his two-wheeler, Jamshed Singh Kapoor has cooked and served free, nutritious steaming dal khichdi to at least 400 homeless, hungry people.
Not a single day has been missed. Not when he had a fever. Not when the pandemic swept across the country. Not even the day his 22-year-old son ended his life.
He fed the poor and then returned home to perform his son’s final rites
That morning, with a heart torn apart, Kapoor still cooked. Still rode through the city. Still fed the hungry. Only after ensuring no stomach went to sleep empty, did he return home to light his son’s pyre.
“I know what real loss feels like. If I stop even one day, someone might not survive the night.”
It all started with a newspaper and a child’s broken heart
Kapoor’s journey began with a deep scar when he was just a child. A short story he wrote was published in a newspaper. But right beside it, he read another headline that tore through his innocence - ‘A hungry beggar beaten to death for stealing food’
He kept staring at the page and made a promise that day - “As long as I am alive, no one near me will die of hunger. Not if I can help it.”
Since 2013, Kapoor has turned this promise into a daily mission - ‘Langar on Wheels’
During the COVID-19 pandemic, when the world shut down, Jamshed’s wheels kept turning. Even when he was unwell himself, he popped a Crocin and carried on.
“You’d be surprised who I feed - former teachers, drivers, even middle-class people who lost everything in the pandemic. Hunger strips away pride. People who once had everything were now quietly sitting on footpaths, too ashamed to beg. Hunger doesn’t care who you were, it only knows who you are now,” he recalls.
To many, he is a one-man army. To the hungry, he is a saviour in a turban.
Kapoor’s mission is rooted in the Sikh tradition of Langar - a practice of feeding anyone, everyone, without question. Because sometimes, hunger can’t walk to a community kitchen. It lies under flyovers, on railway platforms, on hospital sidewalks.
Today, Kapoor dreams of something bigger - a 24x7 Langar Gurudwara, where no one will ever be turned away, no matter the time, weather, or reason. Donatekart has joined him in his fight, but he can’t do it alone. Help Jamshed Singh Kapoor build his dream. Contribute to help him ensure no one dies hungry - not today, not ever.
