Despite Having A Disability, Lata Is Changing The Lives Of Countless Kids One Meal At A Time

When you truly desire to make a difference and refuse to give up, you can achieve anything. Determination is like a superpower, it helps you overcome any obstacles in your path. And Lata ben is the perfect example of resilience. She is a woman whose unwavering determination has transformed the lives of over 200 underprivileged children in Bhuj, Gujarat. Despite facing many challenges of her own, Lata remains focused on her mission.

"At the age of 2, polio left my right hand and leg paralyzed. And that was just the beginning of my challenges. School, daily life, and interacting with classmates became a struggle, but giving up was never an option. Very early on I realised that I wanted to help the underprivileged, and I’m so happy to be able to do that now. There’s no better feeling than this.”- Lata ben

These Women Are Making Homemade Meals & A Heartfelt Attempt At Improving The Lives Of These Kids

Over 5 years ago, Lata started Moghal Maa Mahila Mandal, an NGO that focuses on the health and well-being of underprivileged kids in Bhuj. Along with five other dedicated women, she cooks nourishing meals from scratch 3-4 times a week and personally distributes the food to children in different areas of Bhuj, ensuring that each child receives a warm and hearty meal. The smiles on the faces of these kids speak volumes about the impact of this small but mighty initiative.

“All these women are so dedicated to this cause. No matter what is happening or how our day is going, we ensure that this feeding drive isn’t stopped. Many of these kids don’t even have the opportunity to go to school. Their parents, despite working all day, can’t afford healthy meals for them. That’s why the meals we give them are so important to them. We feed them a variety of dishes that we make ourselves and we’ve seen so many kids’ health improve as a result of this.”

Moghal Maa Mahila Mandal goes above and beyond sustenance. In addition to providing meals, these compassionate women take the time to teach the children to read and write. Empowering them with education, they aim to break the cycle of poverty and create a path for a brighter future.

“We’re just 5-6 women, and we’re able to touch the lives of so many kids. I can only imagine the impact we can create with more support. So many more children can get nourishing meals and a chance at a better childhood.”

While the dedication of Lata ben and her team is incredible, they face several challenges. The women contribute from their own pockets to buy groceries, but it's not enough. They also need larger cooking vessels as it’s crucial to cook larger quantities of food, enabling them to feed all the children at once instead of in batches.

“We not only have to spend on groceries but also on taking 2-3 autos every time we have to feed the children. This has become extremely expensive for us. With your support, we can cook more food for these children and do so in convenience. Hence, we can save more money for transportation and go to many more areas.”
