Project
The Pasi community, hidden away in remote villages of Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, and Jharkhand, has long been forced to rely on tapping toddy from palm trees as their primary source of income. For generations, their children have watched their elders climb trees, collect toddy, and sell it for a meagre amount, knowing this would one day be their fate too. These children can’t afford to dream of a different future. They live day by day, finding joy only in the warmth of a meal they receive, if they are lucky enough.
“They don’t make alcohol out of choice,” Devanand Kumar, a man born and raised in this very community, explains. “They are forced to work here for a morsel of food.”
Devanand wants to give these children from the Pasi community a chance to dream and live a better life
With limited resources and a heart full of hope every day, Devendra and his team cook meals for 250-300 children daily. These meals are a lifesaver for these children who have seen only suffering and poverty. Devanand also inspires them to learn and go to school - the only way to escape this cycle of poverty. He is their beloved Masterji.
“They learn better when they are no longer hungry,” he says. “When we reach the villages with the cooked meals, kids and elders surround me with happy, expectant eyes. They know they will get warm meals now. This makes us really happy.”
Devendra shares how children as young as 12 spend their days climbing the dizzying heights of palm trees, risking their lives for a few drops of sap. These fragile, thin trunks leave dark, painful marks on their chests, hands, and ankles—a constant reminder of the dangerous work they endure daily.
Instead of sitting in a classroom, learning and dreaming of a brighter future, these children are trapped in the same cycle of hardship that has plagued their families for generations. Instead of growing up carefree, they are burdened with a task no child should ever have to face.
Help Devendra feed and educate the children of the Pasi community
Despite their tireless efforts, there are days when Devanand and his team struggle to gather the resources needed to feed the children.
"We are always worried about the next day, wondering if we can continue this feeding drive."
These children are innocent. They don’t ask for much—just a meal, and maybe the chance to go to school. They live moment by moment, happy when they have food today, unaware of what tomorrow might bring. Devanand and his team are working to break this cycle.
They have taken up the mission to provide not only meals but also education to the children of the Pasi community. With proper food and schooling, these children might finally have the chance to dream of a better future. But they can’t do it alone.
"We need aata, dal, fresh vegetables, and different kinds of spices so that we can feed warm meals to these children," Devanand pleads. Along with this, they also need stationery for the children.
Your support can change their lives. Every meal, and every contribution brings these kids closer to a brighter future.
