Story of the changemaker

When Siddhesh told his father, “I want to be a farmer like you,” his father gripped his shoulders, his calloused hands trembling with both pride and sorrow. “You’re meant for bigger things,” he said. “Promise me you’ll never return to this cursed life. Farming is in our blood, but blood runs thin when there’s nothing to nourish it. The land… it’s dying and so are we.” Siddhesh nodded with guilt.

But how could he abandon the land that had shaped him and his father’s life?

These words left a deep impression on Siddhesh who often watched his father toil endlessly, only to return home with an empty heart and a thinner wallet. After completing his degree, he returned to his drought village Kendur in Pune, only to face resistance - from his community and his own family.

“When I told my father I wanted to farm, he flatly refused to even give me some land,” - Siddhesh.

It felt like a rejection of his dreams. Determined, Siddhesh leased land in a nearby village and started anew.

Seven years without a single day off from the field, Siddhesh is revolutionizing Indian agriculture

At 28, Siddhesh often reflects on why he left a promising career in engineering to embrace the same fields his father once warned him against. The turning point came during an internship with an NGO, where Siddhesh conducted soil tests across drought-hit regions. This revelation was more than academic for Siddhesh. It was personal. Farmers in his village were drowning in debt, many driven to the unthinkable

The organic carbon content,” Siddhesh explains, “is like haemoglobin in our bodies. Without it, the soil becomes lifeless.” He shares how years of chemical abuse had drained the soil, leaving farmers debt-ridden and desperate.

Farmers thought he was just another educated young man with theories but no lived experience

Farmers resisted, clinging to the belief that chemicals equaled survival. Siddhesh realized that farming, like any community-driven activity, needed role models to shift mindsets.

Agro Rangers’ training camps became a lifeline for struggling farmers. Mornings were spent learning about soil health and climate change, while afternoons were dedicated to hands-on fieldwork. Exposure visits to successful organic farms inspired many to take the leap. To date, they have trained over 2,000 farmers, converting 160 plots into thriving organic farms.

We’ve planted 80,000 saplings, each one a promise of a better future,” Siddhesh shares with hope.

Siddhesh received an award from the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) for his commendable work.  Their passionate team of 15, all children of farmers facing similar hardships, now carry the weight of this mission. Many of them have seen debt push their loved ones to the brink.

Planting seeds of change, yet the dream of 1 lakh saplings remains unfulfilled

One of Agro Rangers’ most ambitious initiatives has been planting saplings - 80,000 to date - which now generate four times more income for farmers while improving soil quality. However, this success has come at a cost. Each sapling costs ₹250, and with limited funds, the dream of planting 1 lakh saplings remains just that: a dream.

Despite these triumphs, challenges remain. Siddhesh’s dream is to plant 1 lakh saplings, but lack of funds holds him back.

Every sapling we plant, every farmer we train, is a step toward a future where no farmer feels the need to take his own life.”

Let’s ensure that the hands that feed India can feed their own families with dignity

Siddhesh’s story reminds us of our shared responsibility and not just of his own; it’s the story of every farmer who has fought against despair. He dreams of a future where the hands that feed India can finally feed their own families with dignity, where the soil breathes life, not chemicals. But to make this dream a reality, Siddhesh and his Agro Rangers team need your support. Every contribution brings them closer to a future where farming is not a burden but a badge of honour.

About the NGO: Founded by Siddhesh Sakore in 2017, Agro Rangers Trust supports small-scale farmers in drought-prone villages of Shirur, Rajgurunagar, and Ambegaon blocks in Pune District, Maharashtra.
