Starving In Silence. Support The Forgotten Families In Dhanbad’s Coal Mines
Project
In the coal towns of Dhanbad, entire families elders and children live in crumbling shacks, surviving on scraps. Once the lifeline of the region, they spent decades carrying coal, walking barefoot through heat and rain, and breathing in dust that never left their lungs.
“Kanta Devi, 68, still coughs up coal dust,” says Deepak Kumar, founder of Nand Care Foundation. “She told me, ‘My hands remember the weight of coal more than they remember touch.’ That stayed with me.”
Today, these families have no savings, no pensions, no food security just empty stomachs and tired bodies. Children skip school to help their parents. The elderly wait for someone to check if they’re still okay.
“They built this place with their sweat. Now they’re growing old in pain, and their children are starting life the same way,” says Deepak.
Hunger is their everyday companion.
Most homes have leaking roofs, torn mats, and no drinking water. Families often survive on tea or leftover rice. They don’t ask for much, just a warm meal, a dry roof, and a little care.
No steady work. No food. No support. Just survival.
“There are days when we reach elders who haven’t eaten in two days. Many faint from weakness. Their stomachs make more noise than their voices do,” shares Deepak Kumar, Founder of Nand Care Foundation.
No one deserves to sleep hungry — especially not those who built the backbone of this nation’s economy.
For 5 years, Nand Care Foundation has supported these forgotten workers delivering groceries, clean clothes, adult diapers, toys, and water to those who need it most.
“We’re not just giving things. We’re giving back a little dignity,” says Deepak.
They’re not asking for much, a warm meal and just a chance to live with peace.
