Story of the campaigner
The world in grappling with the Coronavirus outbreak. The impact of the pandemic is severe universally however, the worst affected are the poor older persons. Older people are at maximum risk of COVID-19 since they have more chronic ailments than younger people and their ageing immune system makes it harder to fight diseases, infections and viruses. Recoveries are usually slower and more complicated.
In India 80% of the people who died due to COVID-19 were above 65 years of age. More than 17% of people affected by the deadly virus are senior citizens above the age of 60 years.
We need to have an integrated strategy to support the abandoned and deprived elderly, who are often seen as the ‘last’ and the “lost” during disaster relief and rehabilitation efforts. Gram Vikas Trust, Bharuch recognizes the need to reach out to this group of vulnerable elderly population and make sure they survive and thrive.
“Today in India, almost 9% of total population comprises of older people. This section of population largely remains invisible in a society where development in linked with productivity. They are generally considered frail, sick and a spent force and therefore of the no use. Researches are showing that the risk of contracting COVID-19 increases substantially with age, with 80 percent of death in persons over 65 year old. It is therefore very important to pay attention to the needs of the elderly and protect them during this pandemic. The relief efforts made by Gram Vikas Trust, Bharuch and its team during COVID-19 pandemic have been laudable and I am sure that this “Age Care Project” will be successful in addressing the needs of poor and abandoned older people.
My best wishes to Gram Vikas Trust, Bharuch and everyone involved. ”
