Story of the changemaker
“I’ve faced a lot of criticism and disapproval in my life. When I first started working and encouraged other women in my village to work also, I was accused of corrupting them. But I didn’t give up. Everyone around me was discouraging me to sell my work, but I knew I had to do something. So many women here have similar stories. They’ve had to overcome a lot to be where they are today. And now, the pandemic has added to their hurdles. With no work or income, they’re struggling.” - Ruma Devi, President, Gramin Vikas Evam Sansthan
The second wave of the pandemic affected millions of lives across the country. However, it’s the people in rural India who are suffering the most. Having lost their livelihoods and only source of income, they have no one to turn to. Ruma Devi and Gramin Vikas Evam Sansthan want to help thousands of women in Rajasthan survive this crisis.
Ruma Devi’s Inspiring Journey
Having lost her mother at the young age of 5, Ruma Devi’s struggles began very early on in life. At 17, she was married and went to live with her in-laws in Mangla Ki Bedi, a village in Barmer, Rajasthan. This small, dusty village had little to offer to young Ruma Devi. There were no schools and she had plenty of time on her hands after finishing the house, she started embroidery and soon started stitching small bags and selling them.
Despite the taunts from the people around her, she got together a group of women who could also embroider and bought a sewing machine. In 2008, she approached Gramin Vikas Evam Chetna Sansthan (GVCS), an NGO working with rural artisans and connecting them to the market to help make their handicraft a viable means of livelihood.
Today, she’s the president of GVCS and is responsible for the financial independence of over 22,000 women in Barmer and Bikaner in Rajasthan. They excel in textile applique cut work, patch work and hand embroidery. They make stoles, sarees, dupattas, cushion covers, curtains and much more.
The Second Wave Has Left The Artisans Struggling Again
Ruma Devi’s relentless efforts to uplift so many women in Rajasthan has made a difference to so many people. She has showcased their work on national and international platforms, and has even worked with renowned designers. Unfortunately, ever since the beginning of the pandemic they have been struggling to make ends meet.
Thousands of women are looking to you for support amidst this pandemic. Your support can save their lives.
