Hunger continues to be one of the major challenges India faces even today. Currently 101 on the Global Index Score, countless underprivileged people in India continue to struggle to get even one meal a day. 

According to The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World, 2020 report, 189.2 million people are undernourished in India. This means nearly 14% of our population is undernourished. This causes multiple health hazards, especially in children - causing them to be underweight or have stunted growth. 

The Pandemic Worsened The Situation 

While millions already struggle with hunger, the pandemic that began in 2020 only made their condition worse. Several people lost their jobs, their homes, their families, and their livelihoods. Many labourers in India rely on daily wages for their survival, and with the ongoing crisis, they have had no means to even earn the minimum wage. 

Families were starving as they struggled to afford medical care for their loved ones. The pandemic left millions more without any help. And their struggle continues. 

There’s A Silver Lining 

However, amid these challenges, there are several NGOs across the country who have come forward to lend a helping hand to all those suffering due to hunger. Whether it’s people in rural India or the homeless, these NGOs have been able to reach out to thousands and give them healthy meals to survive. 

However, it’s not enough.
