While Janmashtami is celebrated worldwide, Mathura and Vrindavan hold a special place in these celebrations, being deeply connected to the birth and childhood of Lord Krishna. Temples are adorned with flowers, lights, and vibrant fabrics, creating a magical atmosphere. 

But amidst this festivity, we tend to forget the widowed mothers of Vrindavan 

Vrindavan is also home to countless widowed Matajis who have left their homes seeking peace and happiness. These women spend their days immersed in bhajan and kirtan, relying on the kindness of strangers to survive. They are abandoned by their families and society, left to fend for themselves in a place far from the comfort of their former lives.

Many of these widows are elderly and frail. Their bodies are bent and weakened by age, making it difficult for them to stand or walk for long periods. With no means of support, they are often forced to beg on the streets for a morsel of food. The sight of these women, with their tired eyes and weathered faces, is a heart-wrenching reminder of their suffering. They sit on the dusty roadsides, their hands outstretched in silent plea, hoping for the kindness of passersby. 

Pure Devotion Foundation, an NGO based in Rajasthan, has been a beacon of hope for these widows and sadhus in Vrindavan for many years now. They have tirelessly provided food and support, bringing solace to these mothers. This Janmashtami, they wish to continue their noble work and need your help.

“All year, they wait for this festival. Immersed in spirituality, they want to pray to the Almighty. But sickness and hunger don’t allow them. About the NGO: Pure Devotion Foundation is an NGO founded during the COVID-19 crisis to support widows in Vrindavan who were struggling with food shortages due to the lockdowns. What began as a mission to serve 80 widows quickly expanded to help over 1,000 widows across Vrindavan, Goverdhan, Radha Kund, and Haridwar.
