This Sankranti, Give Fresh Meals To Thousands Of Hungry Pilgrims At Gangasagar Mela
Feel free to ask Campaigner for a new update on this Fundraiser.
Story of the changemaker
As the sun rises over the Bay of Bengal, the sacred site of Gangasagar turns into a sea of humanity with devotees coming from far and wide. The journey is a testament to unwavering devotion as pilgrims brave challenging conditions to reach the holy site. The shores echo with the sounds of hymns and prayers, and the air is thick with the fragrance of incense. Pilgrims, wearing saffron robes and carrying pots of holy water, navigate through the crowds with a single purpose - to immerse themselves in the purifying waters.
‘Sab Tirtha Bar Bar, Gangasagar Ekbar’
‘The virtues acquired from other holy places several times are equivalent to the virtues acquired from visiting Gangasagar only once’ - this popular hymn has been immortalised in the heart of every pilgrim who travels across states and countries to reach the sacred shores of Gangasagar.
The Gangasagar Mela Unites Millions Of Pilgrims & Sadhus From Across India & The World
Gangasagar is an island of South 24 Parganas, West Bengal. Gangasagar Mela is the world's second-largest human gathering that takes place annually in West Bengal during Makar Sankranti. It is held at the confluence of the Ganga and the Bay of Bengal. This event attracts millions of devotees and has a rich history that dates back to ancient Hindu mythology. According to Hindu beliefs, taking a dip at this confluence can purify one's soul and cleanse them of their sins.
The history of the mela dates back to King Bhagirath, a legendary figure in Hindu mythology. He performed intense penance to bring the sacred Ganges to Earth, purifying the souls of his ancestors. Today, the Gangasagar Mela attracts pilgrims and sadhus from all over the country. The ceremonial bath during the festival is considered very auspicious, and devotees believe that it washes away their sins and leads to spiritual enlightenment or moksha. This annual event not only upholds West Bengal's rich cultural and religious heritage, but it also stands as a testament to the enduring faith that unites millions in their pursuit of divine grace.
“Everyone that comes here has so much hope and faith in their hearts. And most of them are above the age of 60. However, the infrastructure here is made of temporary tin sheds and toilets. There’s not a single hotel or restaurant on this island, how will these older pilgrims manage in these conditions?” says Sundar Prabhuji of Pure Devotion Foundation, who visited the mela last year and observed the challenges that people were going through.
He then decided to ensure all the pilgrims got fresh and healthy meals the following year. And now, he needs your support to make this dream a reality. The challenges of the pilgrims are plenty and Pure Devotion Foundation wants to ensure that these people don’t go hungry on this auspicious occasion.
Your Support Will Ensure Thousands Of People At Gangasagar Get Healthy Meals
Pure Devotion Foundation is seeking your help to get groceries, so they can prepare fresh and nutritious meals to feed thousands of people twice a day. Their feeding drive depends on your kindness.
"We have the capacity to make 7,000 meals a day, but this will only be possible with your support. I want all the pilgrims to be able to practice their faith in a safe, comfortable, and healthy environment."
This Makar Sankranti, you can help thousands of pilgrims at Gangasagar by providing them with healthy meals.
