Help Ramlal Old Age Home Build A Safe Haven For Hundreds Of Abandoned Elderly

Old age is supposed to be the relaxing years of one’s life, the twilight at the end of a long and hard day. But for many, even their old age is filled with worry and difficulty. The on-going crisis has only worsened matters for the elderly, who are extremely vulnerable. At this moment, their health and safety is a matter of public wellness for us all.

Old age - a burden?

India has a large population of elderly- 104 million men and women over the age of 60. Most of them live with their families but there are thousands of elderly living in old age homes. These elderly people have been kept in old age homes because their families can’t or won’t take care of them. These old people have lived entire lives filled with rich experiences, both hardships and joys and now they live alone, away from familiar faces. Loneliness and feelings of abandonment plague a lot of them. 

While we have a large ageing population, India only has about 728 old age homes. Some of these are free to stay, some are paid, some are mixed, and some are exclusively for women. These old age homes provide not just food and shelter but are an important outlet for socialisation and maintaining quality of life. Among these old age homes, a unique home is Ramlal Old Age Home. 

How does Ramlal Old Age Home take care of its residents?

Ramlal Old Age Home is situated on the banks of the holy river Yamuna and has been operational for over 12 years. They provide safe, spacious, furnished rooms for old people with attached washrooms and personal assistants to help residents move about, bathe, eat, etc. Around 350 old men and women call this their home and here they are treated like family. Ramlal Old Age Home provides entertainment to keep the elderly mentally active including cow cuddling sessions, park visits, satsang bhavan, etc. They also provide wholesome and nutritious meals to keep the residents healthy and nourished.  

Residents at Ramlal Old Age Home also have access to 24/7 care which is of prime importance in this crisis. The crisis in 2020 made health the top-most priority for all elderly and Ramlal Old Age Home is very proactive in this matter. The crisis took a huge toll on the old residents.
