Handicapped By Polio, This Man Is Empowering 450+ People With Disabilities In Bhuj

Feel free to ask Campaigner for a new update on this Fundraiser.

Seventeen years ago, Hemendra Jansari founded Lok Seva Sarvajanik Trust in Bhuj with a vision to uplift the lives of those who have no one to look after them. Five years ago, the trust established an ashram for the mentally and physically disabled, reuniting over a hundred souls with their families. During this time, they've provided a home for around 450 individuals.

“Society is not kind to these people who have some form of disability. I have seen brothers refusing to take care of their siblings, sons, and daughters leaving their parents on the road because of their condition. I have always been fortunate to be surrounded by my loving family but not everyone has the same life. And so I wanted to do something for them,” - Hemendra Jansari, Founder, Lok Seva Sarvajanik Trust.

A polio survivor himself, Hemendra dedicated his life to uplifting countless other disabled souls

Talking about his childhood, Hemendra recalls that 7 other kids in his village were affected by polio - there was not much awareness and hospitals were far away. But since he hailed from a family of doctors, he got the right treatment and despite some difficulties, he can now live a more or less normal life

“But I have seen disabled people on the roads and the suffering they go through and I decided to support them and give them a respectful life.”

With 65 current members, Lok Seva Sarvajanik Trust conducts night drives four times a week, identifying and aiding homeless souls in need. The NGO offers essential services such as clean clothes, warm meals, regular doctor visits, and round-the-clock care for bedridden individuals and those with severe mental disorders

“After months and years of staying on the roads, their faces light up when we give them a warm bath and a clean place to sleep. You will be surprised to see how little things like this can make someone happy…”

Over the years, Hemendra has reunited many families and brought back the smiles on countless faces. He fondly remembers the 22-year-old boy from Bihar who found himself lost, separated from his family for years. After searching for him for over three years, his family had lost hope and even performed his funeral rites, believing their beloved son was no more. But Lok Seva Sarvajanik Trust’s efforts in conducting night drives paid off when they found the young man.

“With love and proper counseling, he slowly started to remember about his village and his family. We contacted his parents, who couldn’t believe their ears. They were overwhelmed to meet their son who they had thought was no longer alive!”

The reunion was nothing short of miraculous and Hemendra realised that hope can shine even in the darkest of times. In these past years, he has seen the transformative power of kindness and how even addicts can start living a healthier life and contribute to the community.

But Hemendra faces several challenges now and needs your help to continue

The Ashram is home to people who are on regular medicines and need a proper diet to support their health. Apart from that, some residents soil their clothes while others need help to even sit up and use the bathroom

“They’re all in need of special care and we can’t ignore any of their requirements. Some get violent, some start crying like little children and some are too weak to even hold spoons and eat their food. We need groceries and hygiene products to give them a comfortable life.”

Besides this, they’re also in need of an ambulance because their old car is no longer in good condition. With a functioning ambulance, they can rescue many more abandoned and homeless souls. Even a small amount that you donate can make a big difference.
