This Guru Nanak Jayanti, Help This Sardar Support 100+ Abandoned Elders

The warm smile on Ashok Singh’s face is a welcoming sign to everyone who doesn’t have a home or the means to afford a full meal. All his life, he had wanted to serve those in need, and give them a better life and now at 60, Ashok Singh is a ray of hope to hundreds of old people who are left to die on the streets by their own families. 

By God’s grace, I have all I need - now I want to help the poor and the unfortunate ones 

Ashok Singh recalls how he used to share his lunch and dinner with people on the road who seemed hungry. 

“I never gave this a second thought. Wahe Guru has given me all that I could ask for. A happy family, a business that lets me bring food to the table, and a roof over my head. I consider myself one of the lucky ones. So, in 2001, when a man approached me, asking for help - I couldn’t say no,” Ashok Singh Sachdeva, Founder, Jinda Jeev Be Sahara Charitable Society, Ropar.

Ashok Singh’s journey started with this old man who used to work as a chowkidar all his life and now that he had retired, he didn’t know where to go. He had no family and the only person he knew could help him was Ashok Singh. 

“I spoke to my wife and we decided to bring him home. And it was while we took care of him, I realised there must be so many out there who have no one to care for them. Soon after, we started helping homeless old people on the roads. With help from my friends and family, I was able to give them a better life.” 

Finally, Ashok Singh started a shelter home by the name of Jinda Jeev Be Sahara Charitable Society in 2014 and now they have 100 residents staying with them. They’re old and helpless and many of them are not in the right mental state too. They can hardly remember their names or even their family members. But Ashok Singh and his team of dedicated volunteers are working very hard to make them feel comfortable and give them a safe home.

“No one deserves to live like this. As soon as we bring them here, we give them a shower and clean clothes. Each day is an opportunity for me to give these unfortunate people the life they dreamed of, the life they deserve. With you by our side, I am certain we can help many more in need.”
