As winter approaches across India, many elderly and destitute people struggle to stay warm and healthy. For those living alone or without regular support, the drop in temperature can make daily life extremely difficult. Thin clothing, temporary shelters, and limited access to warm meals offer very little comfort against the cold.
Elderly Communities in Dhanbad Need Support
In areas around Dhanbad, especially near former mining settlements, several elderly individuals live in small homes made of tin or mud. These structures provide minimal insulation, and many seniors do not have adequate winter clothing to stay protected from the cold.
With reduced mobility and age-related health concerns, even simple tasks become challenging during winter. Some seniors rely on neighbours for hot tea or small portions of food, while others spend most of their time indoors to avoid the cold air.
“I wait for the sunlight every morning,” says Shanta Devi, 79, from a locality near Jharia. “A warm blanket helps me rest peacefully. It gives me the strength to get through the day.”
Her words reflect the experience of many elderly people who simply need basic winter essentials to live comfortably during the season.
