Joseph Has Dedicated His Life To Helping Hundreds Of People Who're Homeless, Support Him

Sometimes we are faced with dire situations when our whole life flashes before us and we are made to reflect on how we have been spending our time. A similar thing happened to Joseph Crasta many years ago when he met with a near fatal accident that he survived by a miracle. 

“I used to be an inter-state bus driver, met with an accident. I was in no condition to drive a bus for a long time. I started to drive an auto. One day I saw a lady, hungry and aimlessly wandering near the fish market of Mangalore city and was drinking water from the fish basket. I wanted to do something for her.  I felt this was God’s way of telling me that I need to help the lady and many more like her,” - Joseph Crasta, Founder, Snehalaya. 

Snehalaya’s mission is to spread love and empathy

Established on August 26th 2009, with a motto to love, care and provide service to the needy, Snehalaya in Mangalore is now home to 230 residents. Some of them are old and abandoned while the others are mentally challenged and are in no condition to go back home on their own. 

“Mother Teresa and her commendable work with the poorest of poor have always been an inspiration for me. In Snehalaya, we try to give all our residents the best of care and medical facilities and even psychiatric support. We want them to go back to their respective homes but for all those who have nowhere to go, we also give them shelter.” 

Apart from these, Snehalaya also works to provide mid-day meals to all those who come with the patients to the hospital. Since the last 5 years, it has successfully catered to the hungry and the needy. They have also lent their helping hand during disasters viz floods, land-slides, COVID-19 Crisis, through dedicated volunteers. Housing, education, health facilities, free ambulance service are some of the noteworthy activities of the Trust.

Joseph Needs Your Help To Carry On His Work 

Joseph and his dedicated team work day and night to give Snehalaya’s residents a happy and comfortable life. But it is not easy and the pandemic has made things only tougher. The donations that used to flow in have stopped and meeting day-to-day expenses have become very difficult. 

“We need your support to look after our 230+ residents who have no one else in their lives. Our primary needs are that of groceries, medicines, and a washing machine which will allow us to provide a healthy and clean lifestyle. Your support will make a huge difference.”
