This Doctor Quit His Job & Dedicated His Life To Saving Strays, You Can Support Him

Dr. Shyamraj Iyer is an incredible human being. Once a homeopath doctor, he quit his job, and a life of comfort and sold all that he owned to give hundreds of strays a life of happiness. Over a period of two decades, this man has been single-handedly rescuing countless animals in need. This is his story. 

I couldn’t see these innocent animals suffer in silence 

“It all started when a mother cat and her kittens came looking for shelter at my tiny apartment in Mumbai. Initially, I was very reluctant to keep them - I even tried to shoo them away. But they were adamant. When I finally put them out of the building, I saw how the mother cat was trying to save her kittens from stray dogs. I gave in and decided to take them home. That’s how my first cat chose me,” - Dr. Shyam Iyer says with a smile.  

Slowly, many stray dogs and cats found a safe home in his apartment, and while Dr. Iyer tried his best to take care of all of them, it was becoming increasingly difficult. His neighbours too started having a problem with so many animals at his place. Finally, after shifting more than 9 times in the last 20 years, Dr. Iyer has set up a shelter home in Thane, Maharashtra. The shelter is now home to 154+ animals including cats, dogs, cows, and goats. He has used up his savings, sold his car and his scooter, and even the small gold jewellery that he had to feed these animals. 

“The shelter is on the outskirts of the city and because I haven’t been able to build a proper boundary wall, people have poisoned some of my dogs or kidnapped some of them. In the monsoons of 2017 and 18, the whole shelter got flooded and I ended up losing 50+ animals. I had almost given up hope when I received help from some animal lovers. With their love and support, I was able to take better care of my animals but the need is never-ending.”

“I have gone days without having any food - just one vada pav in 4 days! But I want to give my animals the best of everything. My family thinks I am being foolish - society thinks I am mad but I am all they have got. Please help me save these innocent souls.”
