Temperatures have reached a record-breaking high of 52.3°C, leaving 1.5 million people struggling under a brutal heatwave in Delhi and NCR. According to news reports, more than 50 people have lost their lives across Delhi and the states of Bihar, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, and Rajasthan. 25,000+ cases of heatstrokes have been recorded. 

The most vulnerable are the daily wage earners, construction workers, and street vendors. They have no choice but to toil under the unforgiving sun, risking their health to make ends meet.

"The heat is unbearable," says Ravi, a rickshaw puller. "By afternoon, I feel dizzy and weak. But if I don't work, my family won't eat." 

Besides heatstrokes and dehydration, the heatwave has brought with it a severe shortage of water 

The heatwave is creating a vicious cycle of problems in Delhi. With temperatures skyrocketing in several places like Mungeshpur, Najafgarh, Pitampura, Chandni Chowk, Seelampur, etc, the water demand has surged, leading to severe water scarcity. Social media is filled with videos showing desperate scenes in Delhi's slums. Residents, especially those in the poorest areas, are forced to chase after water tankers from the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) in a scramble to fill their containers. 

This, coupled with the scorching heat, is causing widespread dehydration and a spike in heat-related illnesses. Hospitals are struggling to keep up with the influx of patients suffering from heatstroke and dehydration. Public health officials are urging residents to stay hydrated and cool, but power outages caused by the increased strain on the power grid make it even harder for people to stay safe.
