“Even today, people don’t want to admit them to schools, they don’t have friends to play with, no one wants to sit beside them - all because they’re HIV+. Imagine spending one’s life in this loneliness and all of this because of no fault of your own! At Rays, we are working hard to change that and give these children the life they deserve,” - Rashmi Kuchhal, President, Rays.
Established in 2010 in Jaipur, Rajasthan, this organisation has been championing the cause of HIV+ children. They not only give them shelter, proper education, and warm meals but also instill hope and courage to follow their dreams. They are working actively to break the stigma and discrimination around HIV patients. This World Aids Day, support their mission to give these HIV+ kids a better life.
Hundreds of children have found hope and purpose in their lives, thanks to Rays
13 years ago when Rashmi Kuchhal and Capt Gurinder Virk wanted to give back to society, they needed help figuring out where to start. During one of their visits to an orphanage, they noticed that the authorities were refusing to take in the child.
“I got curious - what could be the reason, I thought and eventually asked the person in charge. The answer I got was an eye-opener for me. The child was HIV+ and thus orphanages were not ready to take him in - looking after the child was going to be a difficult task, I was told. This made me think and I finally decided to start with Rays. It was supposed to be a home for all those kids who have been suffering silently because of this condition.”
The organisation started with just 3 kids and now is home to more than 50 HIV+ children in need. They come from several remote villages in and around Rajasthan. Most of them hail from poor families. They have either lost both their parents or at least one of them to HIV/AIDS. Lack of awareness coupled with financial constraints forced their family members to treat them differently. To add to that, they weren’t even getting the nutrient-rich they need. Here at Rays, they’re getting all of that and more. They now have a new family and a dedicated staff who are always there for them. The organisation also provided them with vocational training and support for higher education to help them join mainstream society.
However, they need your help to reach out to many more in need
Speaking about the challenges the organisation is facing, General Manager, K. G. Pareek says that they often struggle to feed proper meals to the children. He explains that children with HIV have very low immunity and need a proper diet and a clean and hygienic environment to stay healthy. Therefore, he requests all of you to donate groceries and hygiene materials for the residents.
“To add to this, we need a van to take the children for their periodic visits to the hospitals. The one we had is no longer in working condition. We have 58 kids with us now and we are expecting some more, every week we need to take a few of them to the hospital - getting a van would be a big help,” - K.G. Pareek, General Manager.
Every donation that you make is sure to give these children a better and more secure future.
