Thousands of Indians are living on the streets with no place to call their home. They have no access to food or water and their children can’t even dream of going to school. While the country is moving towards development, there are countless people dying painful deaths because of no help.
Ashray Adhikar Abhiyan, an NGO based out of Delhi, brought the issue of homelessness to the public domain, demanding the government to accommodate them through basic services and welfare schemes. As per their reports, there were almost a lakh of people sleeping on the pavements in Delhi in 2001. Their interventions and model shelters have impacted and continue to support millions of people.
Through regular and targeted efforts, they are tackling the problem of homelessness
Although the institution has been working to help the poor and homeless from 2000s, it was during 2010 when Ashray Adhikar Abhiyan (AAA) officially registered, with Ms. Param Jeet and Dr. Sanjay Kumar as founder.
The organization has been working for the homeless not only in the city of Delhi but also in the whole of India. With breakthroughs in shelter management, health, education, citizenship entitlements, capacity building, media & advocacy, research & policy, and training of hundreds of students, they have played a leading role in every field and have enriched millions of lives.
“We often notice people in the streets who are not in their right frame of mind. But what do we do? More often than not, we ignore them and go our way. This is a mentality that we aim to change. We want to give proper food and shelter to countless people in need. We have been doing it for over 20 years and even during the pandemic. For these people,we are their only hope,” - Dr. Sanjay Kumar, Co-founder, AAA.

While Ashray Abhiyan has been feeding thousands of homeless people in need for ages, the pandemic turned out to be a really tough time. Yet with determination and grit, they have continued their noble work of feeding the migrant labourers, the homeless and those who can’t even afford to buy a single meal. They have also distributed hygiene kits and have provided 24/7 support as well for oxygen cylinders and concentrators.
