“We lost my sister-in-law, Bala Jyothi in 1996. She was a special child. All of us were heartbroken. But my husband, Mr.Ravi Babu, was determined to make a difference. He knew this was not how he would let Bala’s legacy die. So, in 1998, he started Asha Jyothi at Hanuman Junction, West Godavari District, Andhra Pradesh with only 10 children. Today it is a safe home for over 70 residents who have no one else to care for them,” - Madhavi Lata, Director, Asha Jyothi.

Asha Jyothi works day and night to give people with special needs the life they deserve - one filled with happiness, safety, and dignity. They strive to bring back their smiles. Despite multiple challenges over the last two decades, Team Asha Jyothi is determined to work for the underprivileged.

Imagine being abandoned by your own families - their pain will bring tears to your eyes

Children who are physically challenged, speech and hearing impaired, autistic, suffering from Downs Syndrome, and visually impaired have a tough life ahead of them. They cannot walk, eat, or bathe. Even accomplishing basic tasks becomes a matter of concern for them. They need love, security, medical care, and other necessities of life.

“All of them were either abandoned or orphaned at an incredibly young age. It is disheartening to see such children being left out and pathetic to see parents leaving such children at orphanages or abandoning treating them as a liability. This is the exact reason why Asha Jyothi was founded. We want to be there for these children when there’s no one for them.”

Madhavi talks about the stigma and discrimination that People With Disabilities face. In over 20 years of her service, she has seen how society shuns these people - they’re deprived of basic amenities and forced to suffer in silence. She recalls the story of a young girl who was intellectually challenged and suffered s*xual abuse at the hands of a truck driver.

“When we got to know of her, she was 6 months pregnant but had no idea of her condition. While she was shifted to a different institution, we took care of the baby boy she gave birth to. He is still with us and with regular care and medication is slowly moving towards a better life.”

Asha Jyothi needs your support to help many more in need

Madhavi points out that one of the major challenges they face is providing quality care with limited resources. Asha Jyothi runs on donations from kind-hearted people and while they’re determined to make a difference, they often fall short to reach out to as many people as they would want to.

“Most of our residents suffer from rare condition, they need regular medicines for that. They need a nutrient-rich diet because they’re already immuno-compromised. Many of them are in no condition to look after their personal hygiene - we have helpers round the clock to take care of them. We want to continue this service, these people have no one but us. Please support us.”

You can donate groceries, hygiene products, and clothes to support the 70+ residents of Asha Jyothi - every donation is sure to make a difference.
