Story of the changemaker

Two years ago, when someone called and asked us to take away two cows that were causing trouble in their locality, we hesitated. They weren’t injured, and our shelter was close to full. Our priority was rescuing injured cows. But three days later, someone threw acid on them. Suffering 70% burns, they died a painful death. We couldn’t forgive ourselves. If we had had a bigger shelter, we would have brought them home, injured or not…” - says Bhuppi Chaudhary, Founder, Krishna Dham Gaushala.

Bhuppi Chaudhary is determined to change the fate of these gentle animals by building a bigger shelter.

In 2019, when he realized there were no cow shelters in Dehradun, Bhuppi Chaudhary decided to build one.

Today, Krishna Dham Gaushala has grown into the largest cow shelter in the region, home to 1,200 happy cows. 99% of the cows in the facility are victims of road accidents or cruelty. But the shelter has given them a second chance at life. Every cow here is medically treated, well-fed, pampered, and most of all, safe. Bhuppi dreams of a day when no cow is left alone on the streets.

But the Gaushala is on the brink of running out of space

Many more cows are waiting to be rescued. Victims of accidents during rains, landslides, and other factors, these cows live in dangerous conditions. With no one to care for them, they perish from injury. Bhuppi Chaudhary aches to protect them all but is helpless.

Right now, our medical isolation ward can accommodate only 65 cows at a time. If we bring in more injured cows, there won’t be space. We won’t be able to treat them. We can rescue 35-40 cows a month when we get 35-40 calls in a day. Soon, we might have to start saying no to rescues… and I can’t imagine leaving them to their fate. That’s why we want to build a bigger shelter. But with the current expenses, it seems impossible.” - Bhuppi Chaudhary worries

They are already spending 50 lakh rupees a month

To feed 1,200 cows, the Gaushala needs 4,000 Kg of fodder, 1,500 kg of grass, and 25-30 bags of cow feed per day. In addition to this, medicines and medical facilities incur more expenses. With only two hydraulic ambulances, the team is struggling to reach the rescue animals on time. The shelter, as it is, needs help with food, medicines, and ambulances.

A new shelter feels out of reach. But you can change it.

The organization has secured 4.5 acres of land, ready to build a self-sufficient shelter that can house more cows, expand medical care, and improve rescue operations. While the construction will cost them 5 crore rupees, the overall expenses for the sustenance of the shelter will also increase significantly. A bigger shelter means more cows. More cows mean more food and medicines. Krishna Dham Gaushala can’t bear these expenses without your support. You can help the shelter keep going and make room for more injured cows.

Your contribution will save thousands of cows’ lives. Donate now for this sacred cause.
