Story of the changemaker

“We get about 10-15 rescue calls daily. Most of them are vehicle hits, we have rescued dogs who have been run over by trucks in their sleep leaving them in excruciating pain. Often they end up being immobile for lives. And dogs like this find it very difficult to survive on the roads. We look after them in our shelter - Aashiyana,- Pratibha Panchal.

Peanut, a stray dog in Tandalja, Vadodara, was spotted with a painful growth in his throat and brought to the Vadodara Centre For Animal Rescue And Emergency (VCARE). The poor animal was suffering in silence - he hadn’t been able to eat or drink anything for days. But with the proper treatment and love at VCARE, Peanut started getting better and finally returned to his old neighbourhood.

Peanut is not the only one. Since 1997, Nandita Amin and her team at VCARE have been saving over 50,000 needy animals in Vadodara. Her love and compassion are rays of hope for these voiceless beings.

Spread across 1.7 acres of tranquil sanctuary, VCARE provides a haven for animals

VCARE aims to provide a secure and dignified life to the strays of Vadodara, including dogs, goats, cows, cats, buffaloes, monkeys, donkeys, pigs, vultures, kites, and other birds. A passionate landscape architect, Nandita harbours a profound love for nature and animals. Nandita's childhood affinity towards animals led to the creation of VCARE when she recognized the dire need for a hands-on facility for street animals in Vadodara. Currently, Pratibha Panchal is taking care of the facility and giving a second chance to thousands of animals in need.

Over the years, Pratibha has seen several cases of animal cruelty and abandonment. Her team along with other animal lovers have rescued puppies, only a few days old, left in the sewer to die, donkeys with maggot-infested wounds in their hooves, and injured cats and birds. They have boarding kennels for rescues, a dog run, a donkey shelter, a cow shed, and a cat house. They have two skilled vets and proper facilities to give these ailing animals a second chance at life. Since the last few years, they have also been feeding around 250+ strays daily, and ensuring they received necessary care.

“Currently we have over 80 animals in our shelter and we work very hard to give them a happy and fulfilling life. These animals have suffered without any fault of their own, my only aim is to fill their lives with love.”

Pratibha is struggling to continue her mission but with your support, she can save many more lives

For over 20 years, Pratibha and her team have tirelessly worked to make a difference in the lives of animals in Vadodara. However, she cannot do it alone. Now, more than ever, she needs your help. Your generous contributions will enable her to continue providing essential care to Vadodara's animals in need. You can donate dog and cat food, hygiene products, and other essential items to look after these animals. Together, you can make a profound difference in the lives of these innocent creatures.
