Story of the changemaker

Everyone loves videos of elephants playing in the mud and sleeping in the shade of tall trees in the forest, or running around splashing water at each other. That’s exactly how they are meant to live, free and happy, surrounded by their families.

But for elephants in captivity, life is very different. Separated from their families when they’re young, they are made to walk for hours on hot roads. They’re chained, beaten, and used for rides, circuses, and festivals. Their feet rot and their joints swell. Some are injured, some go blind, and some, fed too many sweets by kind visitors, suffer from high blood sugar. They live in pain and isolation. But this Ganesh Chaturthi, you can help rewrite their stories.

But this Ganesh Chaturthi, you can help rewrite their stories.

Because, at WRRC, there is hope for these gentle giants

A sanctuary near Kolar in Karnataka has been rescuing these gentle giants and giving them a second chance at life. Established in 2022 and spread across 50 acres of lush green forest area, this Elephant Care Facility (ECF) is run by the Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre (WRRC) in collaboration with the Karnataka Forest Department.

With mahouts who work around the clock, these rescued elephants receive dedicated care every single day, which includes tailored diets, medicines, laser therapy for wounds, and a whole lot of love.

Here, they are no longer performers. They are elephants again.

Many of these elephants have been broken in spirit by years of abuse and isolation. Dr Sheila Rao, trustee and co-founder of WRRC, recounts their heart-wrenching stories.

Elephants come to us with arthritis, fractured limbs, chronic lameness, and feet with tissue death. Some go through traumatic living conditions that involve giving rides to tourists all day. Others are fed unhealthy food by visitors during captivity, and suffer from dental abscesses and high blood sugar. The stories are endless. These elephants have suffered indescribable agony. But they’re slowly healing and that’s all that matters.” - Dr Sheila Rao.

At WRRC, elephants receive advanced treatments to aid in their recovery. The hydrotherapy pool is a special place that helps elephants with arthritis and pain. The water supports their heavy bodies, so their sore joints feel less pressure. Warm water and gentle jets soothe their stiff muscles, promoting better blood flow and making movement easier and less painful. Many elephants, tired from years of hard work and standing, find comfort, strength, and a better life through these soothing water sessions.

Caring for elephants is no small task. WRRC needs you.

Elephants at the facility are on special diets based on their ailments. They need medicines, wound care, and treatments. It takes a team of trained mahouts, vets, and caregivers to keep the sanctuary running smoothly. But this care comes at a cost, and WRRC needs your support.

This Ganesh Chaturthi, donate to give these elephants a happy and healthy life

Beaten, starved, and abused, these elephants have endured unimaginable torture. The compassionate team at WRRC is doing everything they can to give them a better life, but caring for these gentle giants is a huge task. Your donation can help with food, veterinary medicines, treatments and medical equipment, salaries for the caregivers, and ongoing maintenance of the sanctuary. This Ganesh Chaturthi, as you celebrate the beloved elephant-headed God, spare a thought for these rescued elephants and help give them the life they deserve. Donate now.

This Ganesh Chaturthi, as we gather to celebrate Lord Ganesha, let’s also open our hearts and donate generously to help these majestic elephants live a happy and healthy life.

About the NGO: Karnataka’s first elephant care facility, established in Lakshmisagara in 2022, spans 42 acres of land provided by the Karnataka Forest Department. While the infrastructure has been set up by the Forest Department, Wildlife Rescue & Rehabilitation Centre (WRRC), a Bengaluru-based non-profit, manages the day-to-day operations. Elephants that once lived in captivity now occupy this sanctuary, where they finally experience a peaceful life. However, years of captivity have left them with lasting scars. A dedicated team works tirelessly to ensure these elephants enjoy the happy and healthy life they deserve.
